Dancer, Ensemble Member
Training and Background
A native of Illinois, Hope Folarin’s journey with dance began in adolescence when her mother enrolled her in ballet lessons to improve her posture. Initially, her relationship with dance was anything but harmonious. However, a self-taught summer dance intensive in preparation for college parties transformed her perspective, revealing the magic and joy of movement.
While in college, Hope participated in the Mather Dance Collective and performed on the university’s dance team, further solidifying her love for dance. During graduate school, she expanded her repertoire by studying and performing vernacular jazz dance.
After moving to Austin, TX, Hope began studying West African dance under master dancer Jean-Claude Lessou. She continues to perform and collaborate with his group, Afrique Gninze, while also being a longtime member of Lannaya since 2012, where she actively supports the ensemble’s mission.
Role in Lannaya
Although Hope no longer performs as extensively as she once did, she remains deeply committed to Lannaya’s mission, programming, and impact. Her dedication extends to supporting the organization’s work with the communities and artists it serves, ensuring the rich heritage of West African rhythms and stories continues to thrive.
Professional Career
Outside of dance, Hope is a medical doctor (MD), balancing her professional career with her passion for the arts. Her dedication to both fields reflects her commitment to personal growth, community, and cultural preservation.
Personal Note
Hope’s journey from reluctant ballet student to enthusiastic West African dancer is a testament to the transformative power of dance. As a longtime member of Lannaya and a performer with Afrique Gninze, she is proud to contribute to the ensemble’s efforts to honor and share the vibrant traditions of West African culture. Even with a reduced performance schedule, Hope continues to champion Lannaya’s mission and its work, sharing the joy of movement and cultural expression with audiences and communities alike.
